Abstract

The present work consists of studying the protagonist of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King, and from this, trying to answer the question of whether the hero suffered the fall resulting from his own choices or whether he was used as a puppet by the gods, having no power over his life. own life. Works by Albin Lesky, H. D. F. Kitto and Jacqueline de Romilly will be analyzed to inform the reader about the tragic genre, originating in Greece, where it had greater success and where its great playwrights such as Sophocles emerged, in addition to pointing out changes that occurred in the genre throughout the time. Works by Karl Reinhardt and Albin Lesky will also be analyzed to find evidence that proves the idea that Oedipus followed his destiny. On the other hand, Bernard Knox defends the perspective that the Theban hero was responsible for the consequences of his choices, thus not having external interference. The objective of the work is to consult the nuances of each of the statements and provide a basis to problematize the proposed question.
